ASCEND™ Strategic Diagnostic System

Business problems are often interconnected. A decline in sales may be caused by weak positioning, poor execution, leadership gaps, operational limitations or a combination of factors. ASCEND™ provides a structured way to examine the business, identify underlying issues and determine where attention can create the greatest impact.
When the underlying issue is unclear, businesses may respond by:
Hiring more people
Increasing advertising
Cutting prices
Introducing more meetings
Changing incentives
Replacing employees
Launching new products
Adding more controls
These actions may be appropriate—but only when they address the right issue. ASCEND™ helps leaders slow down the reaction, examine the evidence and make a more informed choice.
Public-facing diagnostic lenses may include:
Strategy and direction
Customer and market position
Sales and revenue performance
Pricing, margin and financial health
Operations and execution
People and organisational capability
Leadership and management
Owner dependence and capacity
Risk and business readiness
The exact scoring logic and diagnostic methodology remain proprietary.
Depending on the engagement, clients may receive:
A structured business diagnostic
Identification of major symptoms and potential root causes
Priority areas for attention
Business risks and capability gaps
Recommended coaching focus
Recommended ETI learning pathway where relevant
A practical action roadmap
Review milestones
Based on the diagnostic findings, the appropriate next step may include:

For issues involving clarity, prioritisation, leadership behaviour, accountability or implementation.

For issues involving business acumen, judgement, decision-making or leadership capability.

For organisations requiring both capability development and coaching support.

For issues requiring specialist financial, legal, HR, clinical or other professional advice outside PSC’s scope.
ASCEND™ is PSC’s structured business diagnostic system.
It helps business owners and leaders assess the current health of the business, identify potential underlying issues and determine the areas requiring the greatest attention.
Rather than viewing each problem in isolation, ASCEND™ considers how factors such as strategy, commercial performance, operations, people, leadership and execution may be connected.
Not always.
For a focused and clearly defined issue, an initial Strategy Session or shorter assessment may be sufficient.
ASCEND™ is more appropriate when:
The issue is broad or unclear
Several business problems appear to be connected
The visible symptom may not be the underlying cause
The business requires a structured health review
The client needs help prioritising among competing issues
PSC will recommend the most suitable starting point after understanding the situation.
ASCEND™ is most useful when a business or leadership challenge appears broader than one clearly defined issue, or when several symptoms may be connected.
For example, a client may be experiencing slowing growth, weak sales performance, unclear priorities, management accountability issues or owner dependence without being certain which areas require attention first.
ASCEND™ helps create a more structured view of the current situation, surface possible gaps or interdependencies and identify areas that may warrant deeper exploration through coaching.
It is therefore particularly valuable at the beginning of a Performance+ or Transformation Coaching engagement, but it is not required for every client.
ASCEND™ examines the business from a broad strategic and performance perspective rather than looking at one issue in isolation.
Depending on the situation, the diagnostic may explore areas such as:
Business direction and strategic priorities;
Sales and revenue performance;
Profitability and financial pressures;
Operations and execution;
Leadership and management effectiveness;
People capability and accountability;
Decision-making and organisational alignment;
Areas where performance gaps or interdependencies may exist.
The purpose is not to produce a generic scorecard, but to help surface the areas that may require greater attention so that subsequent coaching can focus on the most relevant priorities.
ASCEND™ is therefore particularly useful when the visible problem may be connected to several underlying business factors.
After the ASCEND™ diagnostic is completed, PSC reviews the findings with the client through a structured debrief.
The purpose is to help the client understand the areas that appear most significant, explore possible connections between issues and identify which priorities deserve deeper attention.
From there, the client can decide on the most appropriate next step. This may involve a Performance+ Coaching engagement, a deeper Transformation Coaching programme, or a more focused coaching conversation around selected priorities.
ASCEND™ does not automatically prescribe a fixed solution. Instead, it creates greater clarity so that subsequent RISE™ coaching can help the client develop their own priorities, decisions and actions.
No. ASCEND™ is designed to provide diagnostic clarity, not to prescribe a fixed solution or tell the client exactly what to do.
It helps surface areas that may require attention, reveal possible gaps or interdependencies and create a clearer picture of the current business situation.
The findings then provide a stronger foundation for subsequent discussion and coaching. Through RISE™ coaching, the client can explore the implications, consider different options and develop their own priorities and actions.
Where specialist advice is required in areas such as legal, financial, HR or other professional matters, PSC may recommend that the client seek input from an appropriately qualified professional.
ASCEND™ helps determine what requires attention within the business.
RISE™ helps the client decide how to move forward through reflection, investigation, strategy and execution.
A client may begin with ASCEND™ to diagnose the wider business situation and then use RISE™ to structure the coaching and implementation process.
